To Victoria Edelweiss Club Members and Supporters,
As you may have heard, the 2019 property taxes for the Edelweiss Club went from $11,000 to $37,000, and will of course normally continue going up every year....
We thought you would like to know about our efforts to fix this issue long term, and what you can do to help.
The underlying problem is that the Official Community Plan (OCP) designates our land for redevelopment, and the BC Assessment valuation is based on that redeveloped use. An appeal is underway, but the redevelopment issue must be addressed.
Council has often changed the OCP designations, see chart below, and we are asking that the designation be changed to a public/club use category. The zoning also needs to be changed to a club use. This will permanently lower the taxes to a sustainable amount, without relying on the goodwill of future councils.
Councillor Marianne Alto’s recommendation to us was to “partner with a developer”. This will not work for the Edelweiss Club: a new 6 story condo might include a new meeting space for our members, but would result in the loss of the current facility which serves so many others in the community. We would also lose our independence, and the loyalty of our member families to the building built by their parents and grandparents.
We are actively working to change the OCP for our club property, with presentations to Council and interviews on CFAX and CTV.
To support this cause, please call councillors or write Mayor and Council to explain why redeveloping this cultural club is not acceptable to you, why it should stay as a club in the OCP.
Our recent letter to the City with OCP examples as well as contact information for the mayor and councillors.
